The "Toyota Theory"
I'm going to call this the "Toyota Theory". If you wanted to learn everything you needed to know about a new Toyota before buying it, would you be able to get all the info, both good and bad, if you went directly to Toyota?
Of course, you wouldn't. A Toyota salesperson does not want you to hear about recalls, or specific issues with a certain model, etc. They just want you to hear the good stuff so you will buy their product. A person needs multiple sources for any evidence they're looking for, let's say one "good" source, one "bad" source, and one "neutral" source. Example might be Toyota.com for "good", Toyotasucks.com for "bad", and Wikipedia for "neutral".
The same concept applies to any church, cult, company, whatever you want to learn about. Listen to both the good and bad sides before deciding, just like you're buying a car. Better yet, apply this technique to whatever group you're currently in.
