A simple error that highlights the ignorance of most Christians.

I'm constantly surprised by how little research the average christian really puts into their faith/religion. Every time I mention this to a group of christians, they act like they've never heard it before. To be completely fair, I was never taught this when I was neck deep in the religion myself.

The correct Hebrew name for the Messiah was always Yeshua. Most everyone agrees on this. But when it was translated into Greek, it became Iesous, since there was no "H" in the Greek alphabet.

As the Greek NT became translated into English, Iesous became Iesus. As late as 1611, that spelling remained. It's believed that the Geneva Bible in 1769 was the first to use "Jesus", taking the Swiss version of the name. And that version was widely copied, and other bibles after that adopted the same spelling.

Now, I've read MANY articles defending the current spelling. Most of them focus on the concept that names can change between languages and that's perfectly fine. My point is that "Jesus" is not a direct translation from Hebrew to English, it's a bastardized version of 3 or 4 language shifts.

All the christians that scream and rant about "EVERY KNEE WILL BOW AND CONFESS THAT JESUS IS LORD" are getting it completely wrong. The current spelling has been maintained by bible printers solely to avoid confusing people who have been in a lifelong habit of using the current spelling.

If believers really cared about truth and accurate translation of the bible, they should pray to Josh.  Joshua is the English version of the Hebrew name Yeshua.
