Dealing with Mormons, a case study in cognitive dissonance.

I recently had a chat exchange with a mormon cousin of mine.  I asked a few questions about what the mormon church teaches, and provided references indicating where mormon teaching mentions those issues.

To summarize, I asked him about why black people were not allowed to become priests in the mormon church prior to 1978.  What exactly was the reason that mormons didn't allow that?

I also asked him if he really believed that an angel with a sword appeared to joseph smith, who was a convicted con man, and ordered him to marry a 14 year old girl.

This last issue is mentioned specifically on an article listed on the LDS church website.  He replied to both that he didn't believe those statements were true.

I attempted multiple times to show him that his own church website clearly states everything I was asking about.

His final response was to accuse me of pissing all over my family, and then he blocked me from replying.

Mormons are a great example of the cognitive dissonance found throughout religion, but they have some especially difficult mental gymnastics to tackle in order to keep their beliefs in order.

Really, it's far easier to debate a mormon, because it's all low hanging fruit.  So many topics that are right out in the open.  The main difficulty is getting a mormon to be completely honest with themselves.

In the process of believing that their church is correct and accurate, mormons must bypass logic and reason altogether.  Besides polygamy and racism, their church history is rife with con artists, murder, schisms of doctrine, and much more.

Finding massive flaws in the LDS church is easy, the hard part is dealing with the mental state of it's members.  They are accustomed to insanity, and so getting through those roadblocks is challenging.

But oh, it's SO much fun.....
