All religion is about finding an "in-group" that you connect with mentally and culturally, and either by accident or purpose, you find yourself opposed to one or many "out-groups".

It creates small communities of believers that are firmly connected, by sacrificing their ability to be connected to humanity as a whole.

Religion divides more than it joins.
