Documentary "Marjoe"
Just....wow.
This documentary was first published in 1972, it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. "Marjoe" is available from Amazon, and it can be viewed for free at the link below.
Marjoe Gortner was an evangelist who toured various Pentecostal churches, preaching in the exuberant style that was partially taught to him by his mother, and partially learned from rock stars.
He never once believed in God, never once believed in the miracle power that he preached about. Everything he did upon entering a church service was an act, a personality. And yet no one ever once guessed that he was faking the whole thing.
The congregation members embraced every word he spoke without question. The man obviously had no spiritual guidance, everything he said was carefully orchestrated to get a response. It's sometimes chilling to watch and see how easily the church members can be swayed by simple words.
Mandatory viewing for anyone in a Pentecostal church.
